AGNES B « FUTUR ANTÉRIEUR » EXHIBITION

If you are in Paris this April...make a turn at the Agnes B Galerie Du Jour!

AGNES B Exposition Futur Antérieur

"The intense fascination for the future revealed by certain past works is reciprocated by the equally intense appeal that these past works have for contemporary artists, notably through the historical form of modernism. From the way in which we previously imagined the future, and the retrospective gaze that the present era levels at the past – particularly at its vision of modernity and its often naive or fantastical anticipation of the future – come the questions behind the exhibition FUTURE PERFECT.

Structured around the themes of retrofuturism, steampunk and archeomodernism – a concept developed by the academic, critic and curator Arnauld Pierre - the exhibition FUTURE PERFECT aims to create a dialogue between past cultural output that imagined the future – what is
essentially our postmodern era – with work from contemporary artists, which in both form and substance refer to the past by revisiting and reviving certain visions of the future or of modernity, generated mainly between the last third of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The exhibition takes a transversal approach, intersecting different aesthetic and temporal veins. A selection of work from contemporary artists will be grouped with older work and documents – each giving perspective to the others. In addition, one section will be edicated to cinema and another to the various accessories, devices and artefacts developed by the steampunk community. In a separate section, the exhibition will also include the first French retrospective of the American magazine Retrofuturism, in the form of an installation designed by its originator, the artist and editor Lloyd Dunn"

ARTIST FEATURE: WALTER VALENTINI

Someone I recently discovered, and now consider a major source of interest, WALTER VALENTINI. Learn something about him below or check out the links for more...you might be as impressed as I am.

According to Bronzidorati Gilded Bronzes Museum, he was born in Pergola, in the province of Pesaro, on 22 October 1928, he trained in Rome, Milan (where his teachers were three of the great protagonists of abstract rationalism, Luigi Veronesi, Max Huber and Albe Steiner) and Urbino, where he attended the Scuola del Libro and where Valentini developed his interest in engraving and the art of book illustration. Among his many illustrated volumes are “La città del sole” by Tommaso Campanella and “I Canti” by Giacomo Leopardi.

In Valentini’s work, the poetry of painting and engraving are founded upon several common elements: the artistic culture of the Renaissance based on harmony and equilibrium; the sense of space and proportion to be found in architecture itself; the abstract research of the Russian constructivists and of great masters (such as Hans Richter) who have greatly influenced him ; his interest in music; the need to represent the flow of time, of the cosmos and of memory ; the influence of, and his great sensitivity towards, the materials used (from paper to the surfaces of wood and walls - the artist has created works of art on old and modern buildings in Italy and in the USA).

LEGO MINDSTORM ROBOTICS IN REAL APPLICATION

VIA GIZMODO

Sam Gibbs - " We love Lego; whether it’s being launched into space, opening bottles or recreating the Batcave, it’s always awesome. But did you know its talents even include building artificial bone? Cambridge researchers are using it to do just that. The researchers are using it to automate the extremely repetitive and tedious procedure of building-up artificial bone in the lab. It’s basically just dipping samples into different substances, rinsing and repeating; not something worth wasting a lab monkey’s time on when you can automate it.

Normally extremely expensive lab robots, that cost upwards of £5,000 for even basic models, would be used to perform this kind of task. The boffins from Cambridge have commandeered some Lego Mindstorms kits to create their own homebrew robots to do the task just as well, but on-the-cheap.

It’s incredible to think that a humble plastic toy has so much potential that it can even help out in biological research – making bone of all things. Lego itself certainly sees potential for this kind of thing; it’s teamed up with Google for the 2012 Science Fair, so we could see more Lego-powered wonders like this in the near future."

THE EQUATION: The Letter Racers EXHIBITION

Thanks to FRESH PAINT NYC & MARTHA COOPER for the great pics & recap of the opening event of the recent RAMMELLZEE exhibition.

This event opened at the brand new Suzanne Geiss Company gallery on 76 Grand Street NYC. In attendance on the occasion included some legends in their own right.. Kool Koor, Fab 5, Henry Chalfant, Lee, Jane Dixon & Charlie Ahearn, Mare139, Jason, Riff, Revolt, Sharp, Bill Blast, How&Nosm, Kostas, John the Greek, Edit Diak, Paige Powell also Dave La Chapelle and many more were in the house as well as Ramm’s wife Carmela.

The two alphabet "Letter Racer" series (52 letters) were arranged in flying battle formation in order from A-Z, surrounded by paintings and additional letter study paintings. Although Ramm himself had personally taken me to see all these letters in 2006, they were piled up to the roof in a storage facility, and dusty as all hell, so it's great to see them displayed all together in a gallery space. This is also the first time any whole/ entire IKONOKLAST PANZERISM alphabet has been displayed and marks a very important time in history and the GOTHIC FUTURIST movement in general.

Congratulations to everyone involved! Anyone with pics to add here please mail me gmt0237@gmail.com
